2024 Strachan Hartley Legacy Foundation Run

Charity, Community Support, Sport

The 18th annual Strachan Hartley Legacy Foundation Run is set to return on October 20, 2024, at Handsworth Secondary School in North Vancouver. For over 17 years, this beloved event has raised over $590,000 for at-risk youth, proving that when a community rallies together, incredible things can happen. From competitive racers to families pushing strollers, the Strachan Hartley Legacy Foundation (SHLF) Run offers an inclusive, feel-good experience for participants of all ages and fitness levels. And this year promises to be bigger and better than ever.

The SHLF Run: A Tradition of Giving Back

Founded in 2007, the SHLF Run has grown into one of the North Shore’s most impactful charitable events, bringing together hundreds of participants to support youth in need. What makes the event stand out is its volunteer-driven spirit—every penny raised goes directly to Streetfront, an alternative school program located in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside. Through a unique combination of education, sports, and outdoor adventure, Streetfront empowers at-risk youth who have struggled in traditional school settings, helping them thrive in ways they never thought possible.

Streetfront’s success is nothing short of remarkable, with a 96% high school graduation rate and over 200 marathon finishers—many of whom had once faced significant barriers to success. Thanks to SHLF’s fundraising efforts, Streetfront students spend over 35 days each year on outdoor adventures, building confidence, teamwork, and life skills that extend far beyond the classroom.

A Run for All Ages and Abilities

Whether you’re a seasoned runner aiming for a personal best or a parent looking to enjoy a fun, active day with your family, the 2024 SHLF Run has something for everyone. The event offers three races to accommodate various levels:

  • 10km Challenge: A perfect test for more experienced runners looking for a scenic yet challenging route.
  • 5km Stroller-Friendly Fun Run: Ideal for those looking to jog or walk with family and friends, or perhaps push the little ones along in a stroller.
  • Kids Fun Race: A short, fun run for children that encourages participation, movement, and loads of fun.

Each route starts and finishes at Handsworth Secondary School, providing participants with a warm, supportive community vibe.

A Race That Feels Like a Festival

Beyond the running, the SHLF Run is known for its festive, family-friendly atmosphere. Post-race activities include a delicious pancakes, lively music, face painting, and even celebrity guests to keep the excitement high. Massage tables will be available to soothe tired muscles, and prizes will be awarded to top racers and fundraisers. It’s not just a run—it’s a full-day event where you can connect with other participants and experience the joy of giving back to the community.

Race Together, Fundraise Together

The SHLF Run also offers an excellent team-building opportunity for families, corporate groups, and sports teams. Why not make it a group effort? Each team must have at least four members—two competing in the 10km and two in the 5km. Prizes are awarded to teams for the Fastest Time and the Most Money Raised, encouraging friendly competition for a good cause. Fastest teams will be calculated based on the combined times of their top two runners in each distance.

There’s no maximum number of team members, so rally your co-workers, soccer team, or group of friends and make this a community effort. After all, the spirit of the SHLF Run is all about coming together to make a difference.

Streetfront is Transforming Lives Through Adventure and Education

The funds raised through the Strachan Hartley Legacy Foundation Run go directly to supporting Streetfront—a one-of-a-kind alternative school program in Vancouver’s Eastside. Streetfront combines traditional education with outdoor adventures, physical challenges, and sports, offering at-risk youth an environment where they can rediscover their potential. From marathon training to camping trips, these experiences teach students teamwork, perseverance, and self-discipline.

The program’s success speaks for itself: with an impressive 96% high school graduation rate, Streetfront has become a lifeline for students who had previously struggled in mainstream schools. These experiences empower youth to overcome challenges and build the confidence they need to succeed.

A Run with a Purpose

For the participants, the SHLF Run is not just a fitness event; it’s a chance to make a lasting impact. By joining the race, you directly contribute to ensuring Streetfront continues to help youth reach their full potential. Every step you take in the 5km or 10km races supports this vital work, and every dollar raised helps students embark on life-changing adventures, from finishing marathons to completing high school.
